PROJECT LINUS
- Mission: To offer love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort through handmade gifts.
- Origin: Founded in December 1995 by Karen Loucks (Rinedollar) after she read a magazine article about a young cancer patient who found comfort in a special blanket during chemotherapy.
- Name Inspiration: Named after Linus van Pelt, the character from the Peanuts comic strip who is well-known for always carrying his security blanket.
- Impact: Over 10 million blankets have been distributed to children across the United States.
- Structure: A network of over 300 local chapters across all 50 U.S. states is run entirely by volunteers (known as "blanketeers").
How It Works
- Blanket Types: Volunteers knit, crochet, quilt, or make no-sew fleece blankets.
- Quality Standards: Blankets must be brand-new, washable, and free of strong odors, pins, or unsafe embellishments (like buttons or beads).
- Distribution: Blankets are handed out locally to hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, and disaster relief centers.
